Four months. That is how long Australian organisations have to produce a refined post-quantum transition plan, the first checkpoint in the Australian Signals Directorate’s timeline, ahead of critical systems migrating by 2028 and traditional public-key cryptography being retired by 2030.

Research published in July found 87% of organisations are planning, testing or implementing PQC. Only 7% have deployed it across most of their digital certificates.

In a new opinion piece for Defence Connect, our CEO Andrew Wilson argues that the gap matters more in defence than anywhere else. Adversaries do not need a working quantum computer today. They can harvest encrypted traffic now and decrypt it later — and traffic intercepted this year is still a live exposure in 2040.

His point on sovereignty is about control, not isolation: who holds the cryptographic keys, who can inspect and update the technology, and whether Australia can sustain it if international supply chains or priorities shift.
