European air traffic authority modernises its VPN while keeping flight coordination consistent

Industry: Aviation

Region: Europe

The Challenge

Our client, a leading European air traffic authority, needed to retire its aging VPN infrastructure but couldn’t risk any interruption to real-time flight coordination in the process. For an organisation managing live air traffic, even a brief gap in connectivity carries consequences far beyond a typical IT upgrade.

The network ran Layer 3 routed encryption in Transport Independent Mode (TIM), which meant any replacement had to operate at that same layer without forcing a redesign of the underlying routing.

The authority chose a Senetas CN6140 network encryptor for its low latency and its ability to run at Layer 3 over the existing VPN tunnels, which were the two prioritised requirements for their environment.

The rollout integrated directly into the authority’s existing network, avoiding the disruption a redesign would have caused. With ongoing support in place throughout, the client has now completed a full deployment and is realising the benefits of high-performance, uninterrupted connectivity.

Outcomes in summary

  • Senetas CN6140 network encryptor selected for Layer 3, TIM-mode operation

CN6140

  • Micro latency preserved real-time flight coordination throughout the migration
  • Solution integrated over existing VPN tunnels, avoiding a network redesign
  • Ongoing support provided alongside the rollout
  • Full deployment completed, now delivering high-performance and uninterrupted connectivity
