For those outside the field, Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) is essentially about ensuring our digital systems stay secure even when quantum computers become powerful enough to break today’s encryption.

As a proud sponsor of Monash University AUSQRC2025, we were pleased to see such critical discussions unfold—especially during the PQC panel hosted by our CTO Julian Fay, alongside Professor Jonathan Katz from Google, Dr Thomas Prest from PQShield, Dr Danesh Jogia from ASD, and Joshua Lickiss from the Department of Home Affairs.

The insights shared reinforced the urgency of preparing our digital defenses, highlighting that “Uncertainty is no excuse for inaction!”

What resonated with us:

  • The Talent Imperative: A stark reminder of the limited global PQC expertise underscores the need for immediate investment in a skilled workforce.
  • Strategic Investment: Emphasizing the long-term commitment to Lattice-based cryptography as a core defense mechanism.
  • Beyond Audits: A shift toward guiding adoption through standards and tools, driven by increasing government engagement and market demand.
  • Action Without Panic: The PQC transition requires years of work and we must act now—but there is no need to panic.
  • Building the Ecosystem: Securing Australia’s digital future is a team sport. While vendors like Google have dedicated teams, we must focus on building a national ecosystem where organizations of all sizes can access the talent and tools they need. Success depends on a coordinated, whole-of-service approach—linking government mandates like the ASD’s 2030 directive with industry pilots and academic research to ensure no organization is left behind.
  • Authentication is Critical: Fundamental security principles remain paramount; your security is only as good as the lowest part of your fence.
  • Public Trust: The importance of transparent communication to maintain confidence in our national ecosystem and Australia’s digital future.

Thank you to hosts Professor Ron Steinfeld and Dr Muhammed Esgin from Monash University.
