This 3 day course is for IBM Tivoli Identity Manager 5.1 system administrators who are responsible for the administration and configuration of IBM Tivoli Identity Manager 5.0 and agents. Topics include Tivoli Identity Manager system architecture, Tivoli Identity Manager middleware tuning and monitoring, problem determination, and component upgrades.

Objectives

After completing this course, you should be able to accomplish the following tasks:

  • Ensure the health of the Tivoli Identity Manager implementation and middleware through log usage and problem determination
  • Tune system parameters for optimal performance of Tivoli Identity Manager and middleware
  • Upgrade Tivoli Identity Manager components by applying fix packs to Tivoli Identity Manager and middleware.

Course outline

  1. Maintaining System Health
    1. Describe ITIM 5.1 system architecture
    2. Apply memory settings for ITIM components
    3. Manage Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) recycle bin
    4. Set disk usage limits for ITIM components
    5. Set Tivoli Directory Server thread count
    6. Configure recycle bin age limit
    7. Set messaging and timeout values
    8. Configure logging levels, options, and file sizes
    9. Track logs and log sizes
  2. Monitoring the System
    1. Monitor memory usage by ITIM and middleware
    2. Monitor connectivity to database and LDAP
    3. Monitor disk space of application servers and repositories
    4. Monitor cluster members
    5. Monitor DB2 performance and proactively identity potential problems
  3. Problem Determination and Management
    1. Gather and review logging and serviceability functions in Tivoli Identity Manager
    2. Review middleware logs (DB2, TDS, WAS)
    3. Determine the problem category
    4. Increase logging level for the appropriate category
    5. Identify the source of problems with a nonworking configuration by inspecting relevant logs and files
    6. Identify the source of adapter-related problems and resolve the issue
  4. Planning the Fix Cycle, Backups and Upgrades
    1. Perform backups of all IBM Tivoli Identity Manager (ITIM) and system components
    2. Plan the fix cycle
    3. Install upgrades on test environment
    4. Install new adapter or upgrade
    5. Install adapter profile
    6. Install middleware updates
    7. Install Tivoli Identity Manager fix pack
    8. Promote ITIM configuration data to production
    9. Perform Function Verification Test on items fixed by updates
