Course Outline

The following is a high-level description of the contents of this course. Each unit has an overview presentation, and most have a series of student exercises designed to reinforce the concepts presented. The course contains the following units:

  1. Introduction to IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console
    1. This unit describes the solutions areas addressed IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC) and IBM Tivoli NetView. The features and benefits of each product is described as well as an overview of the integration between the two products.
  2. IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console Concepts
    1. This unit presents a number of concepts and terms central to an understanding of the IBM TIvoli Enterprise Console application.
  3. Installing IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console 3.9
    1. This unit provides you with information about planning the installation of IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console and using the installation wizard as well as how to reconfigure the event console.
  4. Event Adapters
    1. This unit describes the ITEC Event Adapters. Event adapters detect when an event occurs. An event is something predetermined to be important, such as status, resource usage, an error, or the clearing of an error. The event adapter formats the information, and sends the formatted information to the event server.
  5. Event Console Administration
    1. In this unit, you will see how to create groupings of events. You will also see how to authorize administrators to access those event groupings so they can see and act upon the ones relevant to their job functions.
  6. Using and Customizing the Web and Java Consoles
    1. Once an IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console event console has been configured, an operator can use it to close or acknowledge event instances. This applies to both the Java version and the Web version of the event console. The console operator can also invoke tasks through the event console and customize the appearance of the event console. This section explains what activities an event console operator can perform and how to do them.
  7. Event Definitions
    1. The goal of this unit is to explain how to define TEC events. The concepts of Basic Recorder of Objects in C (BAROC), the language in which events are defined, are presented.
  8. Rules
    1. The rules engine is a powerful mechanism that applies logic to incoming events. Rules allow the system administrator to detect important sequences of events, to correlate events reported from more than one source, and to proactively address situations before they become problems.
  9. Logfile Adapter
    1. The objective of this unit is to explain everything you need to know to reconfigure the log file adapter to create TEC events from new applications or resources. This is one convenient way to monitor something for which an adapter does.
  10. Troubleshooting IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console
    1. This unit discusses how to troubleshoot IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console. This unit helps you bring together your knowledge of IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console to solve a real-world problem. You will use all of the varied skills learned in this class-defining events, writing rules, and reconfiguring the Logfile Adapter. Some specific failure modes are also presented.
