Course description
IBM Tivoli NetView enables users to discover TCP/IP networks, display network topologies, correlate and manage events and SNMP traps, monitor network health, and gather performance data. IBM Tivoli NetView meets the needs of managers of large networks by providing the scalability and flexibility to manage mission-critical environments.
This course teaches you the skills needed to install and configure IBM Tivoli NetView 7.1 for UNIX. You will gain skills needed to model your enterprise network, configure polling for critical network resources, filter and forward events as needed, and export collected data for analysis.
Hands-on lab exercises allow you many opportunities to practice the skills presented in this instructor-led course.

Objectives
This course enables you to build the necessary knowledge and skills to:
- Perform basic installation and configuration of the NetView server, traditional client, web client, and Mid-Level Managers (MLMs)
- Migrate from a previous version of NetView
- Change IP address and hostname of NetView server
- Manage the size, location, and aging of network logs
- Manage NetView daemons and databases
- Define custom event filters, configure traps, and customize event applications
- Customize discovery of the network and status polling of devices on the network
- Customize the NetView interface, including X-windows display, symbol properties, submap layout, menu bar options, and custom objects
- Load new MIBs and use the MIB Browser to configure SNMP on devices
- Create new SmartSets for objects providing a certain service or meeting specified criteria
- Use Data collections and identify threshold routines for collection of SNMP data
- Build MIB applications to monitor system and network activity

Required Skills/Knowledge
The following skills and areas of knowledge are required:
- Tivoli NetView for UNIX for Operators course or equivalent experience.
- Intermediate UNIX administration, including
- Ability to traverse filesystems (ls, pwd, cd).
- Ability to manipulate files (mv, cp, rm, chmod, chown, mkdir).
- Ability to read/write startup files and scripts (.profile, .kshrc, sh/ksh scripts).
- Ability to view processes (ps).
- Experience in checking physical memory, disk space, swap space.
- Experience in reading, interpreting, creating regular expressions.
- Experience in modifying system parameters.
- TCP/IP network management experience, including familiarity with router configuration; bridging, switching,
routing technologies; broadcast and multicast addressing; and SNMP configuration.
- Shell script writing and reading.
- Experience configuring a web server.
- NFS implementation and administration.
