Course description

This course is designed to cover the fundamentals of the IBM Tivoli infrastructure, which is the foundation for many Tivoli products such as: IBM Tivoli Monitoring, IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console, IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager, IBM Tivoli Remote Control and IBM Tivoli Risk Manager among others. Learning to use Tivoli's infrastructure will provide you with the basic skills needed to work with other Tivoli software. Knowledge of common infrastructure terms, resources, and concepts is an important first step in your preparation for success with these Tivoli products. The information covered in this course will provide you with the opportunity to master several key skills needed to perform day-to-day administrative functions. You will also be introduced to new terminology and concepts associated with administering a Tivoli installation. This training is done in a classroom environment with multiple opportunities to practice concepts by performing student exercises.

Objectives

This course enables you to build the necessary knowledge and skills to:

  • Describe the Tivoli infrastructure environment and the applications that utilize the architecture involved
  • Identify Tivoli Resources and operate/navigate within the Tivoli Desktop
  • Define Tivoli authorization and authentication through Tivoli administrators, roles and policy regions
  • Create and distribute Tivoli profiles and profile managers
  • Create and execute Tivoli tasks and jobs, and use the Tivoli Scheduler
  • Define the different types of Tivoli Policies
  • Create and configure management gateways and Tivoli management agents
  • Describe the basic installation process for Tivoli Management Framework software.

Who Will Benefit From This Course

This is an introductory course that assumes the student has little or no IBM Tivoli Management Framework experience. It is intended for systems administrators and implementers unfamiliar with IBM Tivoli Management Framework. This course provides students with IBM Tivoli Management Framework fundamentals in preparation for more advanced IBM Tivoli Management Framework courses or for Tivoli product courses that are dependent upon the IBM Tivoli Management Framework infrastructure.

Required Skills/Knowledge

The following skills and areas of knowledge are required:

  • Working knowledge of systems administration concepts for the following systems:
    • UNIX (preferably Solaris, AIX or HP-UX)
    • Windows (XP or NT or 2000)
  • Working knowledge in windowing software operation on the following platforms:
    • UNIX (Openlook, Motif, CDE, etc.)
    • MS Windows (Windows 2000, NT or XP )
  • Familiarity with network concepts, especially TCP/IP.

Note: Knowledge of basic UNIX shell commands is strongly recommended. While courses are designed for UNIX and NT, most knowledge and skills obtained in this training can be applied to any Tivoli-supported client type.
